How do you untangle a necklace safely?

What you need
- A clean flat surface.
- Bright direct light.
- Two fine pins, sewing needles or toothpicks.
- Optional: a tiny amount of plain baby powder for a very tight knot.
- A soft cloth for cleaning afterward.
Keep the necklace away from the edge of the table and work over a tray or towel if the piece is very small.
Step 1: Open the clasp
Unfasten the necklace before working. This gives the chain more freedom and lets you feed an end through the knot when necessary.
Step 2: Lay the knot flat
Spread the necklace out and isolate the tangled section. Do not hold it in the air, because gravity pulls the knot tighter and makes individual loops harder to see.
Step 3: Loosen the centre of the knot
Insert two fine points into the middle of the knot and move them gently apart. The aim is to create space, not to pull the chain ends.
Work in tiny movements. Once the centre loosens, individual loops become easier to identify.

Should you use oil or household lubricant?
Avoid mineral oil, baby oil, cooking oil and household lubricants. They can leave residue between fine links, attract dirt and may not be suitable for plated finishes, gemstones or pearls.
